Esports News – The conclusion of Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Sydney 2018 has been an outstanding one for the players and the crowd. Last Saturday, May 6th, the walls of Qudos Bank Arena in Australia had witnessed the thrilling matches, victories, and highlights of one of the biggest CS:GO tournaments in the world.

The final battle

The final battle or the grand final was set between Danish team Astralis and European team FaZe Clan. The latter claimed the first blood on Cache by a triple-kill from Håvard “rain” Nygaard, the team’s Rifler (entry fragger). Seconds after, Astralis got back to their feet after gaining advantage from the opponent’s double economy weapons.

FaZe responded by winning their economy back and immediately blasted a five-round streak. Astralis’ Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander pleaded a tactical pause, and eleven rounds after, Nicolai “device” Reedtz carried the burden by helping his team win the round with some critical kills. However, it looks like the combined efforts of the two wasn’t enough to defeat Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovács’ impressive 1v2 clutch on the A site. FaZe then maintained their current momentum for the next map, Overpass.

The second map was the most thrilling part of the grand final as both earned 3 winning streaks. Astralis finished off a quick 3-0 lead on the first half of the game, succeeding a perfect T pistol round. Just when the crowd thought Astralis would own Overpass, FaZe instantly won three matches in a row. Astralis tried to keep up by planting more defenses and exerting triple kills, but Nikola “NiKo” Kovač sealed the fate of his team and brought FaZe one map away from the title.

Train, the last map that will determine the champion, turned into a bloodbath just a few rounds after. FaZe began the match on the offensive side, while Astralis gained favor with their solid defenses in a 10-0 scoreline. A 1v3 clutch from GuardiaN turned the tables upside down and gave FaZe a great start. With a 16-14 scoreline in Train, FaZe claims the IEM Sydney 2018 title on three close maps.

The Most Valuable Player

Following his team’s victory, GuardiaN claimed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of IEM Sydney 2018 by HLTV.org and Betway. As the FaZe Clan’s AWPer, he led his team’s victory against Astralis with a 1.28 rating/+25 KDD and the highest damage per round of all players (86.1). His grand final performance overpowered his teammate Nikola “NiKo” Kovač and Astralis member Emil “Magisk” Reif.

This was his first MVP award since joining the European team FaZe Clan, but he was also responsible for his previous teams’ victories at events like the ESL Pro League Winter 2014/15 Finals, ESWC 2015, and IEM San Jose.
