Esports News – The North American open qualifiers for the 2018 Dota 2 International started last week to determine which teams will claim a spot in the regional tournament. But the event didn’t go smoothly and had to be rescheduled, as a patch containing Dota 2’s new battle royale game mode interrupted the entire competition.
The latest Dota 2 patch update was launched alongside the qualifiers to introduce a whole new level of MOBA game. It showcased the most anticipated game mode from the combination of Smash TV, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and roguelikes Dota royale: the Underhollow. Teams had a chance to battle inside a confusing labyrinth filled with monsters, marvels, three-player enemy squads as they searched for Roshan’s rarest cheese and work to be the last team standing.
As the game progresses, participants are expected to navigate carefully and earn the XP and Gold needed to destroy the opposing teams without getting trapped in the center of the Underhollow. Roshan’s cheese frenzy causes cave-ins as it moves towards the center, so no team is safe.
The long-awaited patch ended up interrupting the North American open qualifiers for The International. It is still unknown whether it was the number of players or some errors within the game itself. Players were unable to connect or play matches. A lot of professional teams suffered in the 1st round and completely lost their opportunity to play because of it. After a few hours, tournament organizer Faceit finally announced that they would have to replay the entirety of the open qualifier because of the number of games and outcomes interrupted.
Milos Nedeljkovic or Faceit “Mikey” as everyone calls him shared a statement on Reddit about the situation: “The deployment of the update created downtime for the GC, which caused miscommunications between the game coordinator and our bots. We didn’t expect this patch and any destabilization of GC could endanger the entire open qualifiers and its exactly what happened as Round 1 matches had wrong reports and players couldn’t join the games OR the system was tagging wrong people AFK/Leavers as GC connection was down.”
