Esports News – Chinese production company Mars Media has revealed their next big event for next year: The MDL Macau 2019. The tournament features a $300,000 prize pool with 8 of the best Dota 2 teams from around the world. MDL Macau 2019 will function as a separate event from the previous DPC-centered MDL Macau Minor and takes place from February 20 to 24.
Format and participants
The format now changes given that the MDL Macau is not part of the Dota Pro Circuit series. Only five teams from China get a direct invite, and three of the direct invites are given to two teams from the China Qualifier and the winning team from the Dota 2 Professional League’s sixth season.
Currently, the confirmed teams include PSG.LGD and Virtus. Pro. They were the same dominating teams from previous Dota 2 events sponsored by Mars Media. Many are expecting OG Esports, the winner of last year’s tournament and recently-concluded The International 8, as well as Natus Vincere to make the cut once the final direct invitations are announced.
Explaining the management’s choice to invite PSG. LGD and Virtus.Pro as the first two teams to qualify, Mars Media released a statement: “For this event, we will welcome eight of the finest teams in the world, and we are thrilled to announce PSG.LGD and Virtus.pro as the first two invites. As the champions of our MDL Changsha Major last May before clinching second a few months later at The International, it made perfect sense to invite PSG.LGD. They are joined by Virtus.pro, the winners of the Kuala Lumpur Major, one of the most successful and consistent teams in the world.”
Schedule of events
The actual LAN tournament opens its doors to fans on February in Macau, China after the conclusion of another anticipated event, the DreamLeague Season 11 Minor Qualifiers. MDL Macau and DreamLeague fills the gap between the succeeding DPC events. However, ESL One Katowice LAN will coincide with the Macau event.
According to the organizers from Mars Media, they will release more information about the schedule and the invited teams through the upcoming weeks.
