Esports News – Nike, one of the biggest multinational corporations offering footwear and apparel, recently announced their forged partnership with the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) to become the official tournament sponsor. This is the company’s first move towards the competitive world of esports, bringing Nike China into the spotlight to boost the already growing popularity of esports in the country. Evidently, this partnership is currently the largest sponsorship in LPL history.

Partnership terms

Nike China is set to provide merchandise for all of the teams, coaches, and staff from 2019 to 2022. This includes jerseys, sneakers, and other forms of clothing. Specifically, the company will sponsor LPL apparel and provide “professional and scientific support” to players over the next four years. In addition, Nike continues to find more unorthodox ways to serve esports athletes through research and special physical training programs. Prior to the 2019 LoL World Championships and starting from the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), all LPL players will be geared with an all-new team kit. Their fans can also get on board with a full range of new fan gear.

In exchange, Nike China receives exposure through commercials and brand placement on their live streams and broadcasts for the entire duration of their partnership and on a near-weekly basis. The marketing collaterals might be similar to Nike’s partnership deals with the NFL and NBA, but the brand is hopeful that it will capture the esports market with no problems.

Going over the groundbreaking partnership, Eric Wei, Vice President of Category Marketing at Nike in Greater China, shared in an announcement his excitement regarding the sponsorship: “Esports athletes share the same determination and competitive spirit as all athletes, they spend their lives preparing for intense competition, working relentlessly to improve their reflexes, coordination, vision, mentality, and teamwork.. We are very excited to support LPL teams and players with ground-breaking esports game-day gear and training programs that will help unleash their full potential.”

In response to Wei, Leo Lin, co-CEO of LPL operator TJ Sports, followed up a statement: “Our unprecedented partnership with Nike will enable LPL teams and players to continue to shine on the world stage…esports is a digital sport, and collaboration with Nike will push it to new heights.”
