Esports News – 2019 is almost halfway through, and we’ve already seen the best tournaments 2018-19 Dota Pro Circuit season can offer. The public’s eye is now set on MDL Disneyland Paris Major, the next Major of the season. As it approaches, all the participating regions started undergoing closed qualifiers to seal their slots. China, North America, and Europe always compete with 3 representatives on the front, but why does Southeast Asia, one of the biggest regions that produce the best teams, still only get two qualifier spots?
There are changes in rules for the 2019-2019 DPC competitive season. Now, none of the Minors and Majors will have directly invited teams unless the team wins a Minor preceding the Major. But it seems like the slot distribution is still the same, 3 slots are given to Europe, China, and North America. Other regions like the CIS and Southeast Asia need to compete for 2 slots. This setup is usually present in Major tournaments such as the Kuala Lumpur Major, The Chongqing Major, DreamLeague Season 11. And the same will most likely happen to the upcoming MDL Disneyland Paris Major and EPICENTER Major 2019.
The Kuala Lumpur Major, specifically, robbed SEA of their chance to introduce their array of best professional teams. Despite being hosted in Southeast Asia, the region wasn’t given an extra qualifier slot for the tournament. Instead, 3 slots were once again given to the big 3. The next major in Paris, which is quickly approaching, revealed 15 qualified teams, and only Mineski and Fnatic were lucky enough to be included in the lineup.
Why SEA deserves an extra slot
The slot distribution for the Southeast Asian region every DPC Major is alarming since SEA has produced the likes of Mineski, TNC Predator, BOOM ID, and Fnatic. All these teams had their fair share of ups and downs, but most of the time, they remain consistent and can single-handedly dominate one Major. In fact, some of these teams have beaten most of the NA Dota 2 squads in Major and Minor matches, except powerhouse team Evil Geniuses who currently holds the 4th position on the rankings.
Currently, Fnatic (5th) and TNC Predator (10th) made it to the top 1. Same positions and opportunities should have been given to BOOM ID and Mineski if it weren’t for the limited SEA slots in the previous Majors.
