Esports News – The prestigious Dreamhack Masters series returns to Malmö, Sweden this October to present a new set of exciting CS:GO competitive tournaments. The city was the first host location for the event in 2016 and 2017, while the 2019 event marks Dreamhack’s second major tournament of the year.
Following the reveal, DreamHack Chief Product Officer Michael Van Driel released a statement regarding the organization’s decision to host another event in Sweden: Malmö was the first city to ever host DreamHack Masters and so it holds a special place in all of our hearts, including a legendary win from NiP on home soil. We are tremendously excited to bring CORSAIR DreamHack Masters back to Malmö Arena and fans can expect the best experience yet as we expand to feature matches for 3 days in the arena and continue with more improvements for the visitor experience.”
Dreamhack Masters Malmö features 16 CS:GO teams competing for the lion’s share of the $250,000 prize pool. The organization has yet to reveal the slot distribution for the participating regions, but they will announce more details in the coming weeks as tickets for the event goes on sale on May 24.
The tournament series will be part of the Malmö Game Week festival, and is divided into two stages. The group stage will be held at the MalmöMässan exhibition and convention center, so the matches are open to the public. The playoffs, on the other hand, will be played in front of a live crowd from October 4 to 6 at the Malmö Arena, the same venue of the previous tournaments in the past years.
Esports in Malmö
Malmö is considered as the most popular gaming city in Europe. This is due to the fact that Sweden sees esports as a booming business. A report in early 2018 revealed that the country is the second biggest market in Europe in terms of esports consumption as many locals purchase esports-related tickets and merchandise when there’s an upcoming major tournament in Malmö and connecting areas.
Ever since DreamHack and other esports organizations chose Malmö as one of their host cities, Sweden has managed to successfully build an esports legacy based in the city. This legacy not only highlights the major tournaments within the city, but it also promotes new generations of potential Swedish gamers.
