Esports News – The official start of The International 9 is fast approaching, and the competition now locks in the participating teams for the closed regional qualifiers and the direct invites for the Dota 2 tournament. Many expect the dominating teams in Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) events to get automatic invites, but this season gave everyone a twist with Valve’s new selection system. Meanwhile, underdogs from different regions also surprised the masses with their sheer determination to be included in the lineup.
The lucky teams who earned a direct invite and a chance to claim one of the biggest esports prize pools to date for the official start of TI9 include Team Secret, Virtus.Pro, Vici Gaming, Evil Geniuses, Team Liquid, PSG.LGD, Fnatic, Ninjas in Pyjamas, TNC Predator, OG Esports, Alliance and Keen Gaming. Some of the direct participants failed to dominate their respective DPC events but successfully collected enough points to qualify as runner-ups.
The European region only had two slots for the direct invites, leaving six slots available for the open qualifier participating teams to grab. This is the first time Valve willingly assigned more than 4 slots to European qualifiers. In the same manner, underdog region SEA will have two invited teams and six slots open for the qualifier, while the remaining regions are left with 4 and 3 slots for the open qualifiers.
The Final Tribe and Chaos Esports Club represents Europe in the regional qualifiers, along with the dominating teams of the closed qualifiers. Mineski and BOOM ID will compete under SEA, leaving another 4 spots for the hopefuls. It’s difficult to predict how competitive these four teams will be since the two regions have another set of dominating teams in mind.
In China, 4 teams received a direct invite for the closed qualifier: EHOME, Team Aster, Royal Never Give Up, and Team Sirius. Among the 4, EHOME is expected to ultimately represent the region in TI9 due to their knockout performances at EPICENTER.
CIS will be represented by Natus Vincere, Team Empire, Gambit Esports, Winstrike Team, and Team Spirit. This region has the most number of direct invites, leaving only 3 open slots for those who still want to compete.
North and South America both have the same number of directly invited teams and open qualifier slots. Complexity Gaming, Forward Gaming, J.Storm, and beastcoast will fight for NA, while Pain Gaming, Thunder Predator, Team Anvorgesa, and Team Ham will represent SA.
