Esports News – Riot Games continues to introduce upgrades to the League of Legends system in the form of a new achievement-based mastery feature called “Eternals”. The new ranking system will launch soon in Patch 9.17, following the update on Teamfight Tactics, after Riot finishes its testing on the Public Beta Environment (PBE).

Riot announced the plans for Eternals in a Nexus post published hours ago at the time of writing. From the post, the developer also revealed their decision to push through with the plan and finally make Eternals: “Every couple months, we send surveys to players all over the world asking what types of new personalization features they’d like to see in League. One of the top requests is always for champion-based achievements. We decided to explore what we could do in the space, knowing that we’d have to push through some challenges. Not only is it tricky to add meaningful achievements for 140+ champs, but we also wanted to push the envelope on what this kind of game system could deliver for League.”

In a nutshell, Riot’s exploration highlights several core goals: to provide players an opportunity to gain achievements in and out of the LoL environment, to offer players a new progression system that goes beyond Mastery and Ranked, and to reward players with unique bonuses and perks for their achievements.

Eternal symbols

Since Eternals is a ranking system, Riot created different visual representations for each type of achievement a player can get. The Eternals for each rank features ancient Runeterran gods, and it will all reflect on the Rift. The gods track different metrics of the game—including certain champions—to allow players to create more Eternals and gameplay pillars.

The Eternals and their corresponding achievements are as follows:

The Warden – Controlling champions in fights via CC; Sample Champions: Sejuani, Nunu

The Protector – Damage/CC mitigation via tanking, shielding, or prevention; Sample Champions: Braum, Shen

The Empress – Superior micro/macro; flawless play or decision-making; Sample Champions: Fiora, Ezreal

The Guide – Enabling teammates to make plays and stay in the fight; Sample Champions: Soraka, Sona

The Warrior – Harm in the most brutal, straightforward way possible; Sample Champions: Mordekaiser, Darius

The Trickster – Deceitful, manipulative mind games; Sample Champions: Shaco, Teemo
