2019 Worlds Knockout

Esports News – After 4 days of excruciating matches, the Group Stage Play-In of League of Legends World Championship is finally over. This leads us to the beginning of the Knockout Stage. Today until tomorrow, we’ll witness the best-of-5 matchups among the following teams:

Hong Kong Attitude vs Isurus Gaming
Clutch Gaming vs Royal Youth
DAMWON Gaming vs Lowkey Esports.Vietnam
Splyce vs Unicorns of Love

Four dominating teams from this set, except the ones that already have a team in the Play-In seeds’ respective regions, are seeded into the groups. They will compete in the Main Event of Worlds 2019. Meanwhile, 4 losing teams come home early.

Group Stage conclusions

Both Groups A and B closed out their matches on the Play-In’s penultimate day. 2 teams from minor regions had to say goodbye.

Group A’s matches saw a lot of upsets and double tie-breaker madness. On the first day, LCS 3rd seed Clutch Gaming and CIS’ Unicorns of Love managed to enter the Knockout Stage as the 1st and 2nd seed. With their victories, Oceania’s Mammoth left the competition after losing the first tiebreaker match.

Powerhouse teams eliminated one popular team from Asia in Group B: Japan’s DetonatioN FocusMe, the 3rd seed from LEC. Japan’s loss allowed Splyce and Isurus Gaming to bag the 1st and 2nd seeds, respectively.

Moving on, Groups C and D, ended the Play-In Group Stage’s last day. All teams showcased exemplary performances as compared to the earlier groups, but some teams ended their run here.

As expected, DAMWON Gaming secured the 1st seed in Group D, leaving Brazil’s Flamengo eSports and Turkey’s Royal Youth to determine the 2nd seed through a tie-breaker match. Both teams lost to DAMWON with a 0-2 tally. In the end, Royal Youth defeated Flamingo to advance to the Knockout Stage.

If Group D satisfied our expectations, Group C gave way to upsets and unpredictable team fights. MEGA was eliminated from Worlds 2019. Lowkey Esports, with its 2-straight victories, took the first seed. But it was Hong Kong Attitude that refuses to be beaten by both Lowkey Esports and MEGA, so they settled for the 2nd seed.
