Esports News – G2 Esports ended their first half of the group stage in Group D undefeated, but SK Telecom T1 (SKT) isn’t here to be left behind. The 3-time LoL Worlds champion and iconic Korean team played three, one-sided matches in the group stage. They’re now advancing to the second half of the group stage with a 3-0 score.
Journey to the Worlds
SKT did not appear in last year’s Worlds—where Invictus Gaming won the title. SKT is back this year with an even better lineup: Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, Kim “Khan” Dong-ha, Kim “Clid” Tae-min), Park “Teddy” Jin-seong, Lee “Effort” Sang-ho, Cho “Mata” Se-hyeong, and Kang “Haru” Min-seung. Faker acts the team’s star midlaner, so everyone expects him to work with his magic.
On top of SKT’s starting roster, the organization handling the team shocked everyone this year with a brand new logo. SKT refreshed memories of the fans with a trailer, featuring the new red wings and the team’s last appearance at LoL 2017—their infamous loss to Samsung Galaxy.
Enter the regional qualifiers, SKT showed a good start at LCK Spring Split 2019. They found themselves on the 2nd place finish for 5 weeks, falling behind Griffin. In the playoff semifinals, they swept the series 3-0 to once again face Griffin and win their 7th LCK title.
SKT qualified for the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) after their LCK win. Although SKT defeated every team up to the semifinals, they lost to G2 Esports. The battle went down between IG and Team Liquid fighting for the title.
Group Stage, first round-robin
After 2 years, SKT is back to represent South Korea in the Worlds 2019. The team got seeded to Group C, known as the “Group of Death”, together with Fnatic, Royal Never Give Up, and Clutch Gaming. In a surprising feat, SKT destroyed all teams in just a few days.
SKT defeated Fnatic and Royal Never Give Up last October 12 and 13 in a best of 1 series. They recently gained total domination after defeating Clutch Gaming. According to analysts, the only team with enough potential to beat SKT is RNG. But until then, SKT takes the first seed.
SKT takes the stage once more on October 19 and 20 to face the three teams and enter the next stage.
