Esports News – Riot Games recently announced their set of plans for the League of Legends Universe to coincide with the release of the new competitive season. And one of the developer’s early releases this year is the Legends of Runeterra, a LoL-based strategy and collectible card game to be released on January 24.
The card game was announced a few months before 2019 ended. Riot closed the year with teasers and surprises. Since the announcement, Riot’s team of developers worked extra hard to finish the game. They released multiple beta tests to a limited number of players last November and finally revealed the release of the game this January.
Jeff Jew, Executive Producer at Riot Games, introduced the game to the public through Legends of Runeterra’s official Youtube channel: “Our original plan was to continue rolling out invites for Closed beta as we got key features ready for prime time, but we’ve heard your feedback and it’s clear: the best thing we could do was just release the game to everyone.”
Joining Jew is Andrew Yip, the Design Director for Riot Games who led the creation of Legends of Runeterra’s gameplay and design. Yip confirmed that the game goes online for all LoL members to play: “We hit the gas to make as much progress as possible in the past few weeks. Now, the wait is almost over. We’re headed to Open Beta.”
Jew and Yip constructed the gameplay from scratch to set it apart from other Collectible Card Games (CCGs) in the gaming market. For one, it’s set in the LoL universe. Most characters and elements are derived from the actual LoL game.
Champions Draven, Garen, Fiora, and Teemo are present in the teaser trailer, while the featured locations include Demacia, Noxus, Freljord, Piltover, Zaun, Ionia, and the Shadow Isles. The developers confirmed that they’ll introduce new champions from the Runeterra universe that are not part of LoL’s list of 148 champions.
The objective of the game is for players to collect and unlock cards while increasing their rankings. Players can get cards by playing games and visiting regions. Although there’s an option to pick a preferred region, each challenge allows players to loot places and collect all the cards they can get their hands on.
