Esports News – The recent release of Legends of Runeterra strategy card game marked Riot’s first batch of new video games under Riot Forge. Aiming for further expansion, Riot announced the creation of its new internal studio called Riot Tabletop and the release of Tellstones: King’s Gambit, a new strategy board game based on Runeterra.
Riot made the announcement through its official news page: “We’re gamers. That means more to us than just video games. You can tell by the piles of board games, miniatures, and roleplaying books stashed around the office. So it was natural to explore what would happen if we brought the Riot perspective to tabletop games.”
This isn’t the first time Riot explored the world of tabletop games. In 2016, the developer released Mechs vs Minions, a 2-4 player cooperative board game featuring LoL characters. Tellstones: King’s Gambit, however, features a whole new world millions of miles away from the main LoL universe.
About Tellstones: King’s Gambit
The new tabletop game is a 2-4 player board game that includes a lot of bluffing. It’s an adapted online game based on an Ancient pastime played in the fictional world of Demacia, a region in the Runeterra universe. LoL Demacia is a lawful kingdom with a wide military history, so characters on the game have noble and military backgrounds: kings, princes, princesses, and knights.
Riot has yet to release the official mechanics of the game, but they teased that it has “perfect information for 2 or 4 players”. Meaning, it’s loaded with narrative content and all players have full access on the game’s board.
Tellstones: King’s Gambit is the first of Riot Game’s tabletop releases. Another strategy-based title is in the works. According to the developers, all games under Riot Tabletop, particularly Tellstones: King’s Gambit, will only have features that cater to player experience. Each game’s design, accessibility, components, and innovations are for single-player modes only.
For more information about the board games, Riot released a list of screen tips for its future board game during the Patch 9.20 cycle. King Santon of Demacia and his narrative is available on the League of Legends Public Beta Environment.
