Esports News – The international and live edition of ESL One Cologne in Germany recently got canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but an online regional edition of the same event is on the way. ESL just announced the final teams competing in four ESL One Cologne online CS:GO tournaments in Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania.
ESL revealed the continuation of the event, albeit online, to its official news site. Splitting the 2020 trophy into four regions was deemed necessary to prevent frequent travel and avoid public gatherings.
“Our team went above and beyond trying to make ESL One Cologne 2020 powered by Intel happen offline this year, but after a thorough evaluation we’ve concluded that we have to transition to an Online Tournament. The decision was made after extensive research and understanding of global travel regulations and individual national guidelines due to ongoing COVID-19 measures,” the organizer said.
ESL will be giving away regional prize pools with a total of $500,000 for the four tournaments instead of the usual $1 million prize pool from major ESL events. The remaining $500,000 that had been allocated to the live event will be transferred to next year’s IEM Katowice and ESL One Cologne tournaments.
All tournaments take place between August 18 and 30, simultaneously, and will be present across esports betting sites. The online transition doesn’t affect the tournament format, but ESL revamped the prize pool and point distribution.
